Terms of use

About these terms

These terms govern the Zhuyin Pro app and zhuyinpro.com. They are provided by 橙語管理顧問有限公司, trading as Merry Mandarin, in Taoyuan City, Taiwan (“we”, “us”). By using the product, you agree to these terms where they form a valid agreement under applicable law. If you cannot legally agree to them yourself, a parent or guardian must allow your use.

We give you a limited, non-exclusive right to use the app for lawful personal learning, under these terms and the rules of Google Play. No account is needed. Do not break the security of the app, misuse our brand, or claim our software as your own. These limits do not stop anything that the law or an open-source license allows.

The privacy policy explains how data is handled. Rights that the law gives you as a consumer always apply.

Learning feedback

Tone scores, writing checks, memory curves and levels are learning aids. They come from automatic analysis on your device. Microphone quality, noise, drawing style and device differences can affect them. They are not an exam result or a teacher’s assessment.

Audio comes from the speech engine on your device. Its voice, accent and readings can differ from standard Taiwan Mandarin, and some characters may be read wrongly. Course content, readings and word meanings may contain errors or need context.

TOCFL is the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language. Our word paths follow its published vocabulary lists. Zhuyin Pro is not an official TOCFL product and is not connected with SC-TOP. We do not promise any test result or level of fluency.

Your progress and backups

Your progress is stored only on your device. We have no copy and cannot restore it. Android backup and the backup file in Settings let you move your progress; see the privacy policy. Restoring a backup file replaces the progress on the phone. Keep your backup files safe. They are not encrypted.

Availability and purchases

Supported devices, Android versions and the price appear on Google Play. Google Play checkout shows the conditions of your purchase. These terms create no subscription and authorize no charge.

Purchases follow the Google Play terms. Use Google Play’s procedures for refunds, or contact us for help. Nothing here limits your legal rights of withdrawal, refund or warranty. We do not promise that the app works on every device or on every future Android version.

Ownership and sources

Except for third-party material, the software, design, mascot, map and brand belong to us or our licensors. The app uses these sources. Their own terms apply to them and take priority over conflicting terms here:

• Zhuyin readings: Ministry of Education, R.O.C. (Taiwan), 教育部《重編國語辭典修訂本》 (Revised Mandarin Chinese Dictionary), via the g0v moedict-data project.
• Symbol recordings and stroke order: 2017 © 教育部，國語注音符號手冊-開放部件 (Ministry of Education, R.O.C. (Taiwan), Mandarin Phonetic Symbols Handbook, open components), under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). We converted the recordings to mono AAC, trimmed them and matched their volume, and rescaled the stroke outlines.
• TOCFL word lists: Steering Committee for the Test of Proficiency – Huayu (SC-TOP), 華語八千詞表.
• Character frequency: Unicode Han Database (Unihan), Unicode, Inc., under the Unicode License v3.
• Fonts: Nunito, Noto Sans TC and Lexend, under the SIL Open Font License.
• Word meanings: Merry Mandarin’s own dictionary.

The full notices are in the app under Settings › Licenses and data sources. Open-source licenses do not give rights to use our trademarks.

Responsibility and consumer protection

We take reasonable care when we make the product. Software, reference data and automatic feedback can still contain mistakes. As far as the law allows, we make no extra promise that the product is free of errors or meets every learning need.

Nothing here limits liability that the law does not allow us to limit, such as statutory guarantees, fraud, intentional misconduct or mandatory consumer protection. Where a limit is allowed, we are not responsible for losses that we could not reasonably foresee, or for use outside personal language learning.

Updates and ending use

We may release improvements and compatibility or security updates. We will give the updates and notices that the law requires. We will tell you about important changes to these terms in an appropriate way. Changes do not remove rights you already have.

You can stop using the app at any time. We may end your license for a serious breach, after any notice and chance to fix it that the law requires.

Applicable law

The laws of the Republic of China (Taiwan) apply. This does not remove mandatory consumer protection in the country where you live. Where the law allows, the Taiwan Taoyuan District Court handles disputes. Consumers can still use the courts and remedies that their local law gives them. If one part of these terms is not valid, the rest still applies.
